Brian Hobbs was a huge influence on me, ever since I first met him as my lecturer at the University of Sheffield in the 1980s. He supervised my undergraduate project in structural masonry, an area that has maintained my interest my whole adult life. He gave me the opportunity to study for a PhD in the subject at Sheffield and, although I eventually decided to study elsewhere, I was soon back in Sheffield with Brian to work with him in the same area, as part of a postdoctoral project. Soon afterwards he decided to move to the North East for new challenges, giving me the option to work across both sites, which I grasped. I still remember him driving me up to North Yorkshire in his trusted Reliant Scimitar GTE the first time.

Over the years we worked productively together on a range of research papers and projects, with, once I myself became an established academic, Brian generously providing me with the fruits of his long experience. We last me face-to-face in Sheffield at the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering’s Centenary in 2017.

I will always be grateful for his endless kindness, modesty and support – he will be very sorely missed.

To Brian's Beloved Family,

I wanted to take a moment to express the profound impact Brian had not only on my life but on the lives of countless colleagues and others, both present and future.

During a period of uncertainty in my career, Brian guided me towards success. Not only was he an exceptional mentor, but he was also a friend.

When Brian departed from the university, I was just an apprentice. I wanted to show my appreciation, so I gifted him a Parker pen and some sweets as a farewell gesture. His gratitude touched me deeply. He said it was one of the most cherished gifts he had received. His interest in my career and IT training never wavered. Without Brian's influence, I would not have completed my IT degree or masters.

The memories I cherish of Brian are as diverse as they are precious. From the aroma of his strong morning coffee to his love for cars, particularly his red sports car, each one is a testament to his vibrant spirit.

Around 10 years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Brian for a casual chat over coffee when he popped into Teesside University to see me and other colleagues. His genuine pride in my achievements resonated deeply within me, leaving an indelible mark on my heart.

Professor Brian Hobbs' expertise in engineering bridges was exceptional. Brian's legacy extends far beyond our interactions. His dedication to his students and colleagues undoubtedly shaped the future generations of engineers and scholars. His passion for engineering and knowledge will continue to inspire and live on.

May Brian rest in eternal peace, knowing the profound impact he had on the lives of those around him.

With heartfelt sympathy,
